The Ruvo Cousins: a Fundraising Double-Whammy.
Four-year old Stefano Ruvo lives with a rare genetic disorder that impedes his ability to breathe and to digest. He needs a feeding tube and night-time ventilator support – assistance he now gets at home through the Complex Care Service of the Montreal Children’s Hospital.
“Behind Stefano is a story that will inspire us”, says his grown-up cousin and fundraiser-extraordinaire, Jennifer Ruvo.
At 22 years of age, Jenn is already a practiced hand at fundraising on behalf of the MCH Complex Care Service. “It gets easier year-by-year”, she notes.
Her most recent effort was Brunch with Santa, held at Golf Saint-Raphael in Ile Bizard last December 1st. “The holidays are a time of giving back and spending quality time with the ones you love”, says Jenn. “My goal was to create a festive event that accomplished both.”
Enlisting the help of staff at the Complex Care Service and of family and friends who stepped up, many unsolicited, Jenn approached potential sponsors with a detailed fundraising proposal that included an offer of different levels of sponsorship. She started canvassing about six months before the scheduled brunch because she knew that most large firms have fiscal-year deadlines for sponsorship requests. Throughout the process, Jenn kept her eyes on the prize: to raise money for the Complex Care unit, but also, she says, “to encourage more people to fundraise on their own”.
The Complex Care Service of the MCH needs constant support, so Jenn realizes the importance of recurring fundraisers. These bring in more money, of course -- $17-thousand from the Brunch with Santa event alone. But Jenn’s own efforts also sensitize more people to the vital work and very existence of the Complex Care Service.
