A boost to combat physical inactivity among children

The Institut de la Statistique du Québec’s data is clear: nearly one in four Quebec children between the ages of 6 and 16 are overweight, and 7% are obese. This worrisome situation is being taken seriously by the Montreal Children's Hospital. Fortunately, we can count on our outstanding partners to give a helping hand to combat this worrisome trend. The Fondation Bon départ de Canadian Tire du Québec teams up with the Children’s to donate $100 000 over three years so that kids and parents from underprivileged families are equipped with the tools to adopt healthy attitudes toward nutrition and physical fitness. The MIAM program is a community-based lifestyle modification program for children between the ages of 9 and 12 and their families which helps them to adopt healthy eating habits and an active lifestyle. At an age where children are becoming aware of their bodies, they learn to develop self-esteem and a positive body image, whether or not they conform to society’s standards.

Dr. Laurent Legault, founder of MIAM, says this new partnership presents exciting opportunities. Over 100 families have seen their quality of life improve since the program’s creation, and Dr. Legault believes this new partnership will allow him to help many more families, in many more communities.
