HSBC - Saving Children's Brain

Sick baby Did you know that one of the most dangerous times for a baby is the period right before and right after birth?  Montreal Children’s Hospital researchers have a reputation as world leaders in understanding, treating, and rehabilitating infants and children with brain injuries. Support from HSBC Bank Canada through HSBC’s global 150th Anniversary Community Fund is enabling new and ongoing research on preventing and treating perinatal brain injury, presenting a more promising future to vulnerable infants and their families. “Perinatal complication is the leading cause of death in children under the age of five, and can leave lifelong scars in the form of permanent brain injury among newborns deprived of oxygen at birth,” says Dr. Pia Wintermark, Pediatrician and Neonatologist. “This type of injury is extremely complex and poses a major global health burden. In fact, it is one of the most serious health issues faced by experts at the Montreal Children’s Hospital. It is now important to find innovative approaches to diagnosis, detection and treatment for these newborns. We are very proud to be one of only three projects chosen by HSBC in Quebec. HSBC’s support will also provide direct support to parents and families through the hospital’s Tiny Tim Fund. Over three years, the bank will cover the costs of parking, meals and accommodation for some 180 families in financial difficulty – allowing parents to concentrate on what is most important: helping their child get better. “We are honoured to support the Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation and contribute to life-saving child brain-injury research,” says Charles Douville, Head of Corporate Banking, Quebec Atlantic Ottawa Region, HSBC Bank Canada. “many HSBC employees are passionate about children’s health, and together they helped us decide that the 150th Anniversary Community Fund should include support for medical research and families impacted by childhood illnesses.” HSBC’s global 150th Anniversary Community Fund is providing US$150m in support to more than 140 charities around the world over three years (2015-17) – including eight in Canada – and is in addition to the bank’s regular annual charitable contributions.
