The Foundation

Thank you for helping The Children’s find Unexpected Ways to Heal so sick children in Quebec can return to their mischievous ways!

The year 2020 was unprecedented, etched in our memories because of the global pandemic. But it also gave rise to such special moments as the spontaneous solidarity shown for front-line healthcare workers, our everyday heroes. We received unwavering support from the community, donors, event organizers, partner foundations, sponsors and corporate partners. Joining in were Campaign Cabinet members, our spokesperson P.K. Subban and celebrities like Vernon Adams Jr. of the Montreal Alouettes and Lance Stroll, Formula One driver, who all stood with The Children’s during these uncertain times.

Despite the fragile economy, the business community, bolstered by the efforts of our Campaign Cabinet, supported our initiatives. Our We Can All Be Superheroes campaign provided nearly 100,000 quality protective masks to our young patients and their parents. Funding for ground-breaking and innovative projects, such as the technological transformation that will make The Children’s one of the first “smart pediatric hospitals” in the world, will further increase its international reputation as a leader in pediatric care.

Thank you for helping The Children’s find Unexpected Ways to Heal so sick children in Quebec can return to their mischievous ways! play video icon

Our ad campaign, Long Live Little Brats, also has people from the four corners of Quebec talking about The Children’s. Our touching video was a resounding success, having been viewed over 550,000 times and won over a dozen prestigious awards here and internationally.

Thanks to your generosity, The Children’s will continue to find Unexpected Ways to Heal and help sick children in Quebec regain their fighting spirit.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

The Children's

Sometimes generosity feels even more special…

This past year will remain engraved in our minds as the year marked by a pandemic the world never saw coming. Despite myriad challenges, we are proud that the teams at the Montreal Children’s Hospital of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) were agile and adaptive. Not only did they maintain exceptional family-centred care for our young patients, but they also managed to care for adults who were admitted when our sister hospitals at the MUHC needed beds for patients infected with the COVID-19 virus. In parallel, because innovation is in our DNA, they encouraged many of the unique clinical ideas, research projects, teaching approaches, and other activities that allow The Children’s to develop new and unexpected ways to heal. Of course, their tireless efforts would not have had the same reach or impact without the generous and sustained support of donors.

We wish to underscore that generosity in times of historic hardship, such as 2020-2021, somehow feels even more special. When there’s so much unknown, it is comforting to know that our community continues to be there for us so that The Children’s can attract and retain top specialists and researchers with expertise in rare and complex diseases, offer unique programs to help sick children and their families, including crucial child-life services and financial support for families in need, and purchase vital equipment for diagnostics and treatment.

With this in mind, on behalf of our patients and their parents, as well as our healthcare teams who pride themselves on going above and beyond for them, we express our deepest gratitude to each and every donor who supported The Children’s during this difficult period. We also extend heartfelt appreciation to the leadership, staff and volunteers of The Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation for their dedication to the Hospital’s mission and priorities. Inspiring changes that will transform the lives of children are possible thanks to such exceptional support! Once again, thank you!

Together to find Unexpected Ways to Heal

This year, the face of the world has changed with the pandemic. And while our economy begins to recover, sick children and their families still need us.

As Honourary President of our major Unexpected Ways to Heal fundraising campaign, I am very proud to be a member of a dedicated team for whom the health of our children is not an option, but a priority.

As philanthropists and business leaders, we have an important responsibility vis-à-vis The Children's families. Sick children are counting on us. Together, let's empower The Children's to shape the future of pediatric care, here and all over the world.

Thank you for your commitment and support of this campaign, which will help The Children's find Unexpected Ways to Heal.

Fundraising campaign

$200 M to help young patients be their energetic selves again

The Children’s Foundation launched a major $200-million campaign, the most ambitious pediatric fundraising goal in the history of Quebec, to support innovation in care, research and teaching at The Children’s. The funds will allow The Children’s to remain a world leader in cutting-edge care, renowned for the excellence of its medical teams and researchers from all over the world. Some of the sickest kids in the province depend on the cutting-edge care they receive at The Children’s. And we are confident this campaign will allow us to find Unexpected Ways to Heal and help young patients be their energetic selves again. Because, at The Children’s, we prefer our kids to be spirited, even a little bratty – anything but sick.

Our big projects

Innovation is the key to progress, and The Children’s is uniquely positioned to make new breakthroughs, set new standards in pediatric care and move mountains. Thanks to contributions from our invaluable partners, sponsors and major donors, we can launch these unique and innovative projects. To implement them, we have the best minds in the world and the solid reputation of McGill University’s Faculty of Medicine, the best in Canada.

Centre for Complex Pain

Did you know that 20-35% of children suffer from complex pain? A transformational $5-million gift from Jane Edwards and her brother Eric Hoguet, of the Louise and Alan Edwards Foundation, will benefit children and teens in Quebec living with this type of pain. In support of the newly named Edwards Family Interdisciplinary Centre for Pediatric Complex Pain, Jane and Eric’s extraordinary gift will help to relieve the suffering thousands of young patients.

Their generosity will also allow Dr. Pablo Ingelmo, Anesthesiologist and Pain Specialist at The Children’s, and his team to treat a greater number of patients; expand educational programs for families and primary caregivers; support medical education and fellowship programs at the Hospital; and increase work in pain research. This gift includes a $1.8-million contribution to the Edwards’ Family Endowment at The Children’s Foundation to sustain the Centre in perpetuity.

New Hope for the Great North

Thanks to a historic $5 million gift from BMO ($3M) and the Hewitt Foundation ($2M), children in two of Quebec’s northern communities will receive a diverse range of culturally sensitive services locally at the Minnie’s Hope Centre, the first of its kind in Canada.

Established over five years ago by and for the Whapmagoostui Cree and Kuujjuaraapik Inuit communities, the Centre serves families in both distinct cultural communities. This unique collaboration is built upon traditions, values and knowledge, and the contributions of dedicated experts, which have allowed Minnie’s Hope to become a Canadian leader in its field.

Among other things, the new financial support will double the number of Indigenous families served and provide local resources for Indigenous youth, giving them the best chance to reach their full potential.

OPAL: a child’s medical info just a click away

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, including a major corporate gift, The Children’s Foundation has raised $1,575,000 to date for the Opal App, a patient-centered, award-winning project that aligns perfectly with the Unexpected Ways to Heal Campaign.

Parents of children with serious or chronic ailments have a lot to manage, including appointments, treatment plans, medications, and lab test results. To help them, The Children’s initially deployed Opal for its nephrology patients as a pilot project. Developed at the MUHC Research Institute, this Quebec first allows families to access, understand and share their child's medical information in just a few clicks.

Accessible by smartphone, tablet and computer, the Opal portal was designed to simplify and streamline the health care journey for our patients. Among other things, parents will have the ability to provide the most recent information about their child’s health to the entire medical team.

Applied Biological Therapies Centre of Excellence

Applied Biological Therapies Centre of Excellence

Biological therapies are the fastest growing treatment for children with autoimmune diseases. Experts say that within 5 years, half of all pediatric patients will be treated with this advanced and personalized care. Because so little is known about the long-term effects of these treatments, The Children's is working hard to discover and improve personalized therapies with fewer side effects.

Thanks to our generous donors, The Children’s Foundation has secured $1.5 million to establish the Applied Biological Therapies Centre of Excellence, which will offer new, personalized and safe medical approaches to biological therapies.

Led by Dr. Christine McCusker, Head of the Division of Pediatric Allergy and Immunology at the MUHC Research Institute, and Dr. Claire Leblanc, Head of the Division of Rheumatology at The Children's, the Centre is the first of its kind in Canada to study the effects of biological therapies on children with autoimmune diseases as they move to adulthood.

Your support helps us change the game!

The P.K. Subban Foundation has helped close to 30,000 patients and families at The Children’s. I am so proud of us! The importance of our support over the past 5 years struck me even more in 2020 when the pandemic changed everything overnight. To all of the donors who teamed up with me on this journey, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Every single day, we are making a real difference in the lives of sick children and their families. But we still have work to do! The needs are growing and the Hospital is looking to us. Together, let’s continue to change the game.

The 2020 Caring for Kids Radiothon, in partnership with CJAD 800, 95.9 Virgin Radio, CHOM 97 7 and TSN Radio 690, raised an impressive $1,212,562, to help sick children and their parents. Live on air from outside The Children’s P.K. Subban Atrium, in compliance with health measures in force, 19 young patients’ families generously shared their personal stories of courage and resilience. Despite the pandemic, these families wished to express, in person, their gratitude to The Children’s caring professionals and the exceptional care provided at the Hospital. Scores of listeners joined the Circle of Hugs with a monthly donation and the one-day total clearly demonstrates their generosity in these uncertain times.

The pandemic couldn’t stop one of the most anticipated philanthropic events among Montreal’s business community: the 2020 MCHF Golf Tournament, held for the 24th year at the prestigious Royal Montreal Golf Club. The generous participants came with their smiles, their golf clubs, and of course their masks. They all had the same goal: Give hope to the thousands of families who depend on the world-class care offered at The Children’s. Thanks to an anonymous donor who committed to matching all additional donations up to $100,000, the Tournament raised more than $776 084, surpassing the annual results of the previous four years!

A year unlike any other! Over 360 participants demonstrated their commitment in an inspirational way, despite the many challenges posed by COVID-19, collectively raising more than $240,000 to fund urgent priorities of the Hospital. The teams, who were not able to take their traditional ride through the streets of Montreal, celebrated their fundraising efforts safely with a virtual event, also attended by spokeschild Daniel. Born deaf, this young patient at The Children’s can now hear following the surgical implant of a hearing aid (BAHA). Over the past 29 years, the event has raised more than $13 M to help thousands of families of sick children like Daniel.

The 5th edition of Déjeun’aide looked a little different than usual but nonetheless raised $23,000 for The Children’s! The unique networking breakfast pivoted to a virtual platform, with a series of webinars hosted each Friday in November 2020. With over a dozen leaders in industries ranging from finance to science to entertainment, students and young professionals were offered a glimpse of the pandemic’s impact on these businesses. Déjeun’aide is organized by a volunteer committee operating under the umbrella of the Young Leaders Circle. Since its inception, Déjeun’aide has raised more than $220,000 for priority Hospital projects, including the Febrile Young Infant Research Program led by Dr. Brett Burstein.

Virtual Events

Faced with a new reality, many event organizers ventured into the virtual world this year, finding fun ways to connect with the community. While adapting to the challenges of COVID-19, Andy Collins for Kids, the Sîan Bradwell Fund, SGB Kids, Kurling for Kids and many other dedicated volunteer groups successfully organized online events, all to help The Children’s young patients and their parents who need our support. Their continued commitment, along with their supporters’ participation in virtual trivia nights and cocktail classes, to name a few, is a testimony to the community’s unwavering generosity in these uncertain times.

Creative ways to help our young patients

In this unprecedented year, our community fundraisers found unexpected ways to help our young patients and their families. Drive-ins, mask sales, monthly athletic challenges, and many more creative activities were safely held to help fund the Hospital’s urgent priorities. Our loyal and generous event organizers of Expos Fest, Kids for Life, Revivin’ the Drive-In and The Lena Fund, to name a few, showed great dedication and perserverance. Thank you all for your tireless efforts to help sick children in Quebec get back on their feet!

A Remarkable Feat

We are stronger together. This was proven more than ever this fiscal year, as our donors and partners went above-and-beyond during this life-altering pandemic. Your continued commitment and support allowed us to raise $24.1M in donations, a significant achievement considering the global crisis.

Three sectors in particular stood out: Annual Campaigns, Tributes and Affiliated Charities. At the height of the pandemic, The Children’s community showed exemplary unity by responding generously to our direct mail campaigns with unexpected results given these difficult times.

Our great event volunteers and Foundation’s staff did a remarkable job! Over the course of the year, virtual events were held: Our organizers were finding safe and creative ways to continue raising funds. COVID-19 couldn’t stop our Golf Tournament, which raised $779,645, surpassing the annual results of the previous four years.

Each event, endeavour and donation helped the Foundation meet the Hospital’s most urgent needs and provided the best possible care for our young patients and their families.

COVID-19 has had a significant impact on the stock market, resulting in losses of $14M in the market value of the Foundation’s investments. But we were able to turn things around. Favourable market conditions allowed us to regain the lost value of our investments by September 2020.

In the past year, the Foundation contributed $17.7M in support to The Children’s. Of that amount, the Hospital used nearly $7.3M (41%) to finance research and provide academic support, $1.6M (9%) served to purchase equipment, $4.6M (26%) was allocated to urgent priorities and $4.2M (24%) went to commitments in respect of the new Hospital.

We are extremely grateful for the generosity and support you have shown by contributing through donations, campaigns and events. Together, we are helping the Hospital get the sick children of Quebec back on their feet and supporting the Foundation’s efforts to find Unexpected Ways to Heal. Thank you!

Impact of your donations

Meet three of the patients you’ve helped this year

Léandre, 12

Léandre has been playing the violin since he was 3. After turning 9, he started complaining about headaches when he exercised. When he started throwing up, they headed to The Children’s for a scan. Two days after Christmas he was diagnosed with a brain tumour. He had surgery to remove the tumour, then chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Today, Léandre is being followed closely but is doing well.
Léandre, 12

Logan, 3

Born at 35 weeks, Logan’s esophagus was not connected to his stomach, meaning he couldn’t be fed by mouth. He was rushed to intensive care right after birth and into surgery the next day. While doctors expected him to be in hospital for 6 months, he stayed 16 months! Because he still can’t eat, he carries around specialized equipment in a backpack so he can be fed 18 hours a day. There are more surgeries and procedures to come, but Logan’s a tough cookie!
Logan, 3

Nieve, 4

Nieve had a stroke while in utero but no one knew until months after she was born. That’s when she was diagnosed with a dangerous condition in which fluid accumulates in the brain. After two unsuccessful surgeries, plus a serious infection, Nieve came to The Children’s. Neurosurgeon Dr. Jean-Pierre Farmer spotted the problem and her third surgery was a success. Today, Nieve is all smiles when she comes to The Children’s for follow-ups.
